Venezuelan police have unearthed 1.2 tons of cocaine near an illegal runway in a western state, the Venezuelan National Guard said Wednesday.
Traffickers shipped drugs by air and buried them near the landing strip, taking advantage of the wild terrain in the uninhabited area near a beach in Venezuela's western Falcon state, according to police.
Police said the cocaine may belong to a Mexican drug trafficking ring.
A special police squad has been sent to the scene to further investigate the case, police said, adding that they could not rule out the possibility that more drugs would be found.
Thanks to its geographic position, Venezuela has become a key stop-off point for traffickers smuggling drugs from Colombia to Europe and the United States.
Venezuelan police have so far this year seized nearly 10 tons of drugs and destroyed 160 illegal runways. Source:Xinhua
