Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa on Monday expressed his sorrow and pain over the deaths of 14 young people in a fire in a nightclub on Saturday.
"We are shocked, deeply sad and pained," Correa said.
At least 14 people were killed and 35 injured, two of them critically, during a fire triggered by fireworks in a nightclub in southern Ecuador where an unauthorized concert was being held.
Authorities in Quito on Sunday declared three days of mourning and vowed to file a lawsuit against the "The Factory" nightclub where emergency exits were locked and the victims were unable to flee during the fire.
Most of the victims were aged between 24 and 25.
Accidents like this should never happen again and nobody should elude his or her responsibility, Correa said.
The cause of the tragedy was similar to the one in Argentina's "Republica de Cromagnon" nightclub on March 2004 that killed 194 people.
