Campaigns to improve air and water quality were launched nationwide in Colombia Tuesday to celebrate Earth Day.
Juan Lozano, Colombia's Environment, Housing and Development Minister, said the campaigns are aimed at fighting air and water pollution, the biggest environmental problems in Colombia's main cities like Bogota and Medellin.
A special 24-hour-operating team has been sent to monitor the serious erosion problems in Bucaramanga city, capital of Colombia's northeastern Santander province, Lozano added.
Lozano also stressed the importance of cultivating the social consciousness of protecting the earth, especially among children, so that they will enjoy a better life quality.
First celebrated on April 22, 1970, Earth Day was created by late U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in an attempt to improve people’s awareness of environmental protection.
