Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on Tuesday called on Latin American countries to establish a mutual security and defense policy.

Bachelet made the remarks during a meeting with Army generals from member and partner countries of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) in the presidential palace.

She said the army plays a very important role in Latin America's development and called on "Latin American governments and troops to consider setting up a mutual security and defense policy."

Latin American countries should prove to the world that "their troops can exist as a force to keep peace and bring prosperity to the people," the president added.

The 10th meeting of commissions of Army generals from Mercosur member and partner countries is being held on April 22-24 in Chile.
