Costa Rican President Oscar Arias said Wednesday that his government's rejection to the request for political asylum by Mario Uribe, cousin of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, was a sovereign issue.
"It is a sovereign decision that we don't have to consult with anyone, but with our consciousness and our law," Arias told a press conference.
"Costa Rica cannot give asylum to a person who has been accused of crimes by his country's prosecutor," he added.
Arias said he had talked with Alvaro Uribe to solve the issue, who said it was entirely the responsibility of Costa Rica's government and that they would respect any decision taken.
Costa Rica's Foreign Ministry considered as "inappropriate" the request made by Mario Uribe, who entered the Costa Rican embassy in Bogota Tuesday to seek political asylum after Colombia's chief prosecutor ordered his detention due to links to paramilitary groups.
"Knowing the case foregoing, coming, particularly from Colombia's prosecutor; protected by the right to asylum principles and norms and based on the available information, the Foreign Ministry considers inappropriate that request," the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry said.
