Some 14 people were killed and six injured Saturday in a string of fierce gun battles between suspected drug traffickers on the streets of Mexico's border city of Tijuana.

According to Rommel Moreno, attorney general of Baja California state, the incident was a confrontation between rival members of the same cartel and all of the dead are believed to have been drug traffickers.

Of the six injured, one was a federal police officer while the others were drug gang suspects.

The suspects were arrested for alleged weapons possession among other offenses, an official from the state public safety department said.

More than 20 vehicles and scores of guns were found by police at different sites in the city where the battles broke out, the official said.

The sounds of gunshots were heard by people nearby, according to witnesses.

Tijuana, which is just across the border from San Diego, U.S. state of California, suffers frequent violence with drug cartels battling for control of lucrative trafficking routes.

In January, eight people were killed in a gun battle at a safe-house in the city.
