A group of 36 prisoners tunneled their way out of a prison in northeast Brazil Saturday morning, said Brazilian officials.

The escape happened at a jail in Campina Grande, Brazil's northeast state of Paraiba. The prisoners dug a six-meter-long tunnel from the prison's courtyard to the street outside, which goes right between the prison's two sentry boxes.

Till now, only one escaped prisoner has been recaptured.

Pedro Adalson, director of the Penitentiary Administration of Paraiba state, called the escape a "product of negligence."

He has also ordered an investigation on why the tunnel could have been constructed between two sentry boxes without being noticed by guards.
