Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Sunday reiterated that he will not seek to modify the Brazilian Constitution to enable him to run for a third mandate in 2010 elections -- but he aims to "make the successor."
Sunday's "Coreio Brasiliense" newspaper quoted Lula as saying that he will "make the successor" and participate actively in 2010campaign and elections to back the presidential candidate he believes to be the best.
He said in an interview with the paper that any attempt to extend the presidential mandate to a third period, currently prohibited by law, would damage the consolidation of democracy in this South American country.
"I believe it is unthinkable, if democracy in Brazil is to be consolidated, to think about a third mandate, later a fourth mandate and later even a fifth mandate, and that is nasty for the sustainability of democracy in Brazil," said Lula.
Lula failed to say who will succeed him, although he mentioned that his cabinet chief Dilma Rousseff, of the Labor Party, and deputy Ciro Gomes, of Brazil's Socialist Party, were two possible presidential candidates he liked.
