There are 3.3 million children working in Mexico to help their homes' finances and more than 2 million of them have abandoned studies, a social welfare organization in Mexico said.
The secretary of Workers Confederation of Mexico Fernando Salgado Delgado warned the public about the serious problems of the youngsters working in the country, the "La Cronica" local daily reported Monday.
More than 2 million Mexican children have to go out from their homes to seek sub-employment such as loaders, supermarket's packers, dishwashers and car vigilantes. Many of them even get into prostitution nets, Salgado Delgado said
One of the principal reasons that lead to child-labor is that most of those families are disintegrated because the drug-addicted father abandoned the wife, or a single mother who is the only economic support of the family.
The most dramatic situation happened in the Mexican countryside, from 6 million agriculture workers, especially in the North, 1.6 million are children of six to 14 years old, from them 53 percent are boys, Salgado Delgado said
Around 500,000 children working as agriculture laborers are immigrants or live in rural communities, therefore they are excluded from the educational system, while others offer their work at small workshops or factories.
Mexico's Constitution prohibits minors less than 14 years old from working, while those between 16 to 18 years old must have their parents' or tutor's written permission for work. Source:Xinhua
