An 80-year-old woman was killed and about 300 others were displaced by a subtropical cyclone that ripped though southern Brazil Saturday, Brazilian media reported.
The most affected area was the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul state, where the elderly lady was killed.
Around 300 people were forced to seek shelter in churches and gyms after their houses were damaged by strong wind and downpours. Some 170,000 people remained without electricity during much of the day.
Authorities warned that similar weather could continue on Sunday.
