Some 70 gunmen killed at least 10 cattle ranchers on Sunday in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, a day after a similar attack which killed seven and injured another eight, a local radio network reported.
According to the Panorama Information Radio Network, the gunmen arrived early Sunday in downtown Petatlan in Guerrero state aboard two luxury pickups. They opened fire at people gathering at the house of Rogaciano Alva, president of Guerrero's Cattle Ranchers Union (UGREG).
On Saturday, seven people were murdered and eight were injured when a group of unidentified men attacked UGREG members in a hotel in Iguala, also in Guerrero state, where they were staying.
The multiple homicides occurred at a time when the UGREG members were gathering for the body's 18th assembly, which had been slated for Sunday in Iguala, but was suspended after the murders on Saturday.
The UGREG's leader's whereabouts are unknown. Although he survived Saturday's murders, nobody knows if he survived Sunday's attack, since the victims have yet to be identified.
High power AK-47 and AR-15 weapons were used in both attacks, ballistic experts said Sunday.
Local media said that Rogaciano Alva was linked with paramilitary troops active in Guerrero's Costa Grande region. He was also investigated in 2002 for allegedly ordering the killing of Digna Ochoa, a human rights attorney who represented Zapatista guerrilla sympathizers and anti-logging activists in Guerrero.
