Chilean President Michelle Bachelet toured the country's southern town of Chaiten on Sunday, offering assurances and comfort to residents forced to leave their homes as Chaiten volcano spewed ash after an eruption.
According to official figures, the eruption, which was the volcano's first in thousands of years, forced nearly 4,500 people to flee.
In a makeshift shelter for evacuated residents, Bachelet told them to stay calm and have confidence, adding that the government was working to ensure an ample supply of basics such as food and clothing.
Bachelet praised the residents for having organized themselves and evacuated the zone so quickly, avoiding a possible tragedy.
On Sunday afternoon, Bachelet met with local officials and the director of Chile's Emergency Department Carmen Fernandez.
The president showed special concern to bordering regions such as Futaleufu and Palena, where an intense rain of ash was recorded after the eruption.
