About 57 people died of unnatural deaths and 122 others suffered injuries during the May Day holidays in Ecuador, Police said Monday.
Among the deaths, nine people were killed in car accidents, nine for homicide, seven drowned and two committed suicide. The authorities did not specify the reasons for the other people's death.
From May 1 to May 4, about 82 people were injured in 110 traffic accidents, Police Director Jorge Erazo said.
Police made 786 preventive and control operations across the country with 13,364 agents and officers involved and arrested 721 people for different reasons, Erazo added.
During the holiday period, 253 kg of chloral hydrate cocaine were seized by anti-narcotics police at Guyaquil's port storage and other 10,930 grams of cocaine hidden in a suitcase were also seized at Mariscal Surce's Quito airport, Erazo said.
