Leonard McCarthy, head of South Africa's Scorpions crime-fighting unit, was appointed Monday to head the World Bank's anti-corruption department.
The appointment came a day after the South African government said it would disband the Scorpions, which was established by President Thabo Mbeiki to fight high-profile corruption cases.
"Lenonard McCarthy is recognized worldwide for his integrity, independence and effectiveness in fighting corruption and strengthening good governance," said World Bank President Robert Zoellick.
McCarthy has held numerous positions in South African government and had been appointed as a director of public prosecutions by former President Nelson Mandela.
