Delegates from 10 countries of the Union of South American Countries (Unasur) rejected Monday an illegal autonomy referendum for Bolivia's richest province Santa Cruz.
The agreement was reached at Unasur's 12th Council Meeting of Delegates in the Venezuelan capital, held to make preparations for the forthcoming May 23 summit in Brasilia, Venezuela's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The delegates backed the view of Unasur's temporary secretary Pablo Romero, as well as that of Francisco Arias Cardenas, Venezuelan vice foreign minister for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Both diplomats said that the autonomy referendum held Sunday in Santa Cruz was illegal.
"When countries like Bolivia suffer separatist attempts, it is important to reaffirm the region's willingness to be united," said Romero.
Cardenas said Unasur will be a cure against separatist attempts triggered by foreign factors.
Unasur's delegates are preparing documents for the region's integration that will be signed in the summit in Brazil. They are also writing a constitutive document for Unasur's legal foundation, which will be signed on May 23. Source:Xinhua
