Police arrested 89 people Tuesday in a raid against alleged gang members accused of homicide, robbery and rape in western El Salvador, according to news reaching here.
The arrests were made by some 600 police agents from the Civil Police, Operative Tactical Unit, Police Reaction Group and Specialized Operations Group, among others.
The police broke into dozens of homes early Tuesday and executed 89 of 150 arrest warrants.
Tuesday's arrests would curb crime in Quzaltepeque, 19 km northwest of San Salvador, capital of the Central American country, police said.
In the first three months of 2008, violent crime in El Salvador includes 795 homicides, a 9.8-percent drop from the same period of2007, according to El Salvador's General Prosecution department.
