The United States is discussing the possibility of air-dropping aid over parts of Myanmar devastated by a devastating cyclone, a State Department official said Thursday.

"If we were given permission to go in, we would do so. If, lets say, we were only given permission to be able to drop food, again that is something we would do," Ky Luu, director of the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, told reporters.

"Everything within the law is considered at this point," Luu noted.

The United States has offered in two times 3.25 million U.S. dollars in aid for cyclone-hit Myanmar.

In addition to the aid, U.S. President George W. Bush said on Tuesday that "we want to do a lot more," including sending U.S. Navy ships to help the South Asian nation recover from the effects of tropical cyclone Nargis.

The devastating cyclone struck some areas in southern Myanmar last Friday and Saturday, claiming the lives of 44,000 people so far.
