The United States said Wednesday that Zimbabwean security forces harassed its ambassador and several other diplomats and it issued a protest to the Zimbabwean government.
State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said that the U.S. ambassador and several other diplomats were harassed when they went to a local hospital "to visit some of the victims of the government's violence."
"We have issued a protest to the Zimbabwean government for the harassment of our ambassador and other members of the diplomatic corps. Certainly, it's inappropriate behavior and we wanted to make sure that the government was aware of our concerns about this issue," Casey said.
As to the run-off election in Zimbabwe, "there certainly is an obligation on the part of all the international community to push the Zimbabwean government to make sure that there are conditions in place for a free and fair run-off," Casey said.
Zimbabwe held presidential elections in March and a run-off election is expected to take place on May 23. However, the Zimbabwean Electoral Commission is expected to announce a delay in the run-off election.
