The United States said Thursday that it will continue to support the Lebanese government after the Hezbollah-led opposition and the Lebanese government reached a deal to end violence.
"Our view is, along with others, not only in the region, but around the world, is that we are going to continue to do what we can to strengthen this Lebanese government ...that seeks only to govern on behalf of all the Lebanese people, to extend its sovereignty over all of Lebanon, and to broaden and deepen Lebanese democracy, and to fiercely guard Lebanon's sovereignty," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.
According to media reports, the Hezbollah-led opposition and the Lebanese government reached a deal on Thursday to end Lebanon's worst violence since the 1975-1990 civil war.
For the past week, sectarian fighting between anti and pro-government supporters in Lebanon left at least 24 people dead and dozens of others injured.
