The United States reiterated on Monday its opposition to any contact by any country with Islamic Hamas movement that has been labeled as a "terrorist organization."
"We make clear that we don't think that a contact with Hamas is something that brings peace any closer to the people of the Middle East," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.
"We don't think it is wise or appropriate. We have spoken about that in the past when other individual states have chosen to have contacts," McCormack said.
The spokesman made the remarks after French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner confirmed a report in Le Figaro newspaper that a retired former French diplomat had met Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyaand Mahmud Zahar last month in Gaza.
Hamas, which opposes the existence of Israel and vows to liberate occupied Palestinian territories, has been controlling Gaza since June 2007.
