The Pentagon said it has successfully conducted a test of an unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile early Thursday.

The missile traveled over 10,000 km and hit its target near Guam in the south Pacific, after its launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 3:04 EST (0704 GMT), Pentagon spokesman Raymond Geoffroy said.

The mileage of the missile was about 1,607 km longer than usual, and the Pentagon wants to extend its range every three years, he said.

The launch was an operational test to check the missile system's accuracy and reliability.
