Peru does not intend to withdraw from the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) despite differences with fellow members Bolivia and Ecuador, Peruvian Minister of International Trade and Tourism Mercedes Araoz said Thursday.

"We aren't leaving the CAN, but we hope it could work with the flexibility we need in order to achieve our goals, for example, Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with various countries and Europe," she said.

Araoz told reporters that negotiations for the FTA between CAN and the European Union (EU) are experiencing difficulties.

"It is important to find a way to achieve a commercial alliance with Europe respecting the priorities of each nation," she said.

She affirmed that Peru will provide all facilities for objections raised by Ecuador and Bolivia to be addressed.

CAN members -- Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and Ecuador -- have so far not reached any agreement regarding political, commercial and cooperation approaches in dealing with other regional blocs or foreign countries.

Peru and Colombia strive to move faster toward forging associations with other regions, while Bolivia and Ecuador have maintained reservations to such moves, citing the existing imbalances, among other reasons.
