A forum opened Thursday here to discuss security strategies to boost regional peace and the diplomatic crisis between Ecuador and Colombia.
Ivonne Baki, president of the Andean Parliament of the Andean Community of Nations, voiced her confidence that the Subregional Safety Forum, under the slogan "Towards an Andean agenda of confidence," will incubate a concrete proposal on dealing with regional security problems.
"Peace is the most important issue and we can never lose that possibility," she said.
The forum is drawing experts, representatives of the civil societies and political elite such as U.S. Democratic Senator Christopher Dodd, ex-Bolivian President Carlos Mesa, Argentine Senator Cristina Perceval and Director of the Latin American Studies Center at the Paulician State University of Brazil Hector Saint Pierre.
The working tables will develop three topics: a conflict prevention mechanism, mutual confidence measurement and multilateral cooperation initiative.
