Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Saturday that an armed encounter between Venezuelan soldiers and unidentified armed fighters occurred along the Venezuela-Colombia border during which one person was killed.

Chavez said he was told of the Friday clash by Minister of the Interior and Justice Ramon Rodriguez Chacin.

The president, however, said it was not clear to which group the armed fighters belonged and what they were doing there.

There were no immediate reports on the specific location -- whether it was on the Venezuelan side or the Colombian side -- of the clash.
