U.S. President George W. Bush urged on Monday influential international organizations to send monitors to Zimbabwe where a runoff in presidential elections are to be held in late June.
"We urge the Southern African Development Community, the African Union, the United Nations, and other international organizations to blanket the country with election and human rights monitors immediately," Bush said in a statement released by the White House.
Zimbabweans went to the polls on March 29 to choose a new president, members of parliament and local councilors. But there was no outright winner in Zimbabwe's presidential election, according to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
Presidential runoff election is due to be held on June 27.
Relations between the United States and Zimbabwe have soured in recent years, with the Bush administration accusing Mugabe's government of rigging parliamentary and presidential elections since 2000.
