The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) on Monday donated 50,000 dollars toward relief efforts in western Nicaragua, battered by tropical storm "Alma" over Thursday and Friday.

The money will be used to buy zinc sheets to repair roof around 130 to 150 houses damaged in the storm, which developed into a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall Thursday, U.S. ambassador to Nicaragua Paul Trivelli said.

He said that the donation will be channeled through the Nicaraguan organization of "Save the Children" to a program in the western provinces of Leon and Chinandega.
