The Organization of American States (OAS) Monday expressed the hope that the Aug. 10 revocation referendum called by Bolivian President Evo Morales would be held peacefully.
OAS General-Secretary Jose Miguel Insulza told reporters in the city of Medellin that he hoped that the revocation referendum would take place in peace and that everybody would respect the results.
Morales has agreed to face a recall vote on Aug. 10 along with Bolivia's nine regional governors.
To harmonize the interests of the national government and that of the regions with autonomy will, it is necessary to negotiate, Insulza said.
He added that he was not surprised by the results of Sunday's autonomy referendums in the Amazonian states of Beni and Pardo controlled by the opposition, in which more than 80 percent of voters favored autonomy.
Sunday's autonomy referendums in Beni and Pardo, following a similar vote in the state of Santa Cruz last month, were held despite opposition by the OAS and many Latin American countries and were called by the central government as "unconstitutional" attempts to further divide the country.
