Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said Monday her government supports the endeavor of the United Nations in solving the global food crisis, the local press reported.
The remarks were made during Fernandez's meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Rome, where a high-profile summiton food security will be held on June 3-5.
The two sides discussed cooperation between Argentina and the United Nations as well as the issue of soaring food prices.
During the meeting, Fernandez said that, as one of the major agricultural countries in the world, Argentina would actively cooperate with related UN agencies to make contributions to resolving the world food crisis.
Earlier on Monday, Fernandez also held talks with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Director General Jacques Diouf and signed a cooperation agreement with the FAO head.
The High-Level Conference on World Food Security will discuss short-term solutions as well as new strategies to deal with the effects of global warming, the growing demand for biofuels and agriculture in developing countries.
Participants at the conference will include Ban Ki-moon and heads of state and government from countries across the world.
