U.S. President George W. Bush recognized Senator Barack Obama's victory in the Democratic presidential race, calling it a "historic achievement," his spokeswoman said Wednesday.
White House press secretary Dana Perino told reporters that Bush said "Obama came a long way in becoming his party's nominee... and the historic achievement reflects the fact that our country has come a long way, too."
The president also had good words for Obama's rival, Senator Hillary Clinton, saying she ran a "spirited campaign" and "made history as well."
However, Perino said Bush has no plan to congratulate Obama viaphone, noting the president received no such call from his predecessor Bill Clinton when he won the 2000 general election.
On Tuesday night, Obama passed the threshold of 2,118 national convention delegates needed to clinch this year's Democratic nomination.
