Thousands of people marched Wednesday through the streets of Port au Prince, the Haitian capital, in a protest against kidnappings, local reports reaching here said.
The protesters rallied outside the Justice Ministry and Supreme Court and called on authorities to crack down on the kidnapping scourge that has plagued the Caribbean country since 2005.
Many of the protesters accused Haiti's justice officials of being too soft on kidnappers or even taking bribes to let them go unpunished.
They urged the authorities to punish the abductors with life sentences or even the death penalty.
According to UN police, more than 157 people, including school children and foreigners, have been kidnapped for ransom so far this year in Haiti, 10 percent more than during all of last year. Many of the hostages were killed even though a ransom was paid.
The UN Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti has raised its concerns and called on UN members to help solve the issue that has threatened to scare away investment from the country and jeopardize the economy.
