Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday named Lt.-Gen. Walter Natynczyk as the new chief of defense staff, to replace outgoing Gen. Rick Hillier.
Natynczyk, who currently serves as vice-chief of defense staff, will replace Hillier after he steps down on July 1.
Natynczyk joined the Canadian Forces in August 1975 and became the vice-chief of defense staff in June 2006. His service record includes a broad range of achievement at home and abroad and is the ideal person to lead the Canadian Forces forward, Harper said in a statement.
Hillier, 52, announced his resignation in mid-April after more than three years in the post. He was an outspoken advocate for Canada's military mission in Afghanistan.
The chief of defense staff post does not have a defined length, but the average tenure is three to five years. Source: Xinhua
