The Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) confirmed on Friday that it has terminated the agreement with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's Workers' Party (PT) to support that party's mayoral candidate for Rio de Janeiro for the October elections.

According to the president of Rio's State Legislative Assembly, Jorge Picciani, the agreement negotiated with Lula succumbed to the PT's inflexibility.

The PMDB is the main asset of the group of parties that supports Lula's government, and Governor Sergio Cabral is one of its most loyal allies.

In negotiations with the president, Cabral accepted to support the candidacy of the PT's State Deputy Alessandro Molon for Rio's mayor. In order to do so, the governor had to terminate an agreement previously signed with two other parties.

However, the PMDB expected the PT to support its candidates to the governments of other cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which was not reciprocated.

The obstacles led Cabral to agree to terminate the alliance with the president's party in Rio.

The PMDB is expected to launch its own candidate for mayor.
