Some 500 Bolivian troops were stationed Sunday at a border bridge with Peru in an effort to combat smuggling, according to information reaching here from the Bolivian capital La Paz.

Vehicles, especially cargo trucks, from both sides of the Desaguadero bridge, were strictly controlled by the troops, delaying traffic at the border.

The Bolivian Naval Force is controlling the waterway traffic on the Desaguadero River linking the two countries, which share a border of 1,130 km.

In recent days, the naval force has seized more than 10,000 liters of fuel being transported in boats heading for Peru.

Fuel and other necessities are highly demanded in Peru, where they are sold at higher prices than in Bolivia.
