The city of Irvine said on Monday that FBI statistics show it is the safest city in the United States for the fourth straight year.
"For Irvine to be recognized as the nation's `safest big city' for four years in a row is an extraordinary honor," said Irvine Mayor Beth Krom.
"This distinction reinforces the value of our investment in public safety, and reflects the high standards and professionalism exemplified by our police officers," Krom said.
With a population of over 100,000, Irvine is more than 30 miles(about 50 kilometers) south of Los Angels.
The next four safest cities, in declining order, were Gilbert, Arizona; Bellevue, Washington; Thousand Oaks, and Cary, North Carolina.
The designation was based on FBI data compiled from January through December of 2007 on the crimes of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, auto theft and arson.
