Canada announced Tuesday to increase aid to Afghanistan by 550 million Canadian dollars (550 million U.S. dollars) in the next three years, to help boost reconstruction in the country.

Part of the money will be spent on "three signature projects", including refurbishing the Dahla dam in the northern Arghandabdistrict of Kandahar, building 50 schools in Kandahar as well asimmunizing seven million children against polio, acting Foreign Minister David Emerson said at a press conference in Ottawa.

Canada will also spend more on training Afghan soldiers to help

promote security in the country.

The announcement was made two days before donor countries involved in Afghanistan, including Canada, are scheduled to meet in Paris to talk about aid and development.
