U.S. President George W. Bush will not attend the planned meeting of oil producer and consumer countries on June 22 in Saudi Arabia, the White House said Wednesday.

"We are not aware that this would be a heads of state meeting, and that the president is scheduled to be in the United States on that day," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said.

Saudi Arabia announced Tuesday that the oil meeting would be held on June 22 to discuss the high oil prices.

The United States has urged the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to increase oil production to cope with the high oil prices. However, the OPEC has maintained that the oil market is well supplied and that current prices do not reflect market fundamentals of supply and demand.
