Five prisoners were killed in riots in the penitentiary of Cojutepeque in El Salvador, authorities said Wednesday.

According to reports reaching here from San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, four of the victims were killed by steel and the other one was hanged.

The victims were supposedly related to crime gangs known as "maras."

Four of them were killed in their cells and the other one was hanged in a bathroom.

The authorities were hunting for those responsible for the murders.
