Visiting Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde on Thursday appealed for the prompt re-establishment of diplomatic ties between Ecuador and Colombia.

"It would be great if the two friend and brother countries re-established diplomatic ties," Garcia told reporters during his two-day visit to Ecuador.

He expressed hope that the "re-establishment of diplomatic ties could be determined" during the upcoming gathering of foreign ministers from the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), scheduled for Monday.

However, he noted that Organization of the American States is the body in charge of brokering the issue, rather than CAN.

Garcia also voiced his country's wish to promote ties with Ecuador, especially in the border regions. He said bilateral trade has increased some 60 times since Peru and Ecuador signed a peace deal in 1998, putting an end to years of territorial dispute.

"We have tasks to do in the future and we cannot remain satisfied because the present relationship is better than ever, we believe we can make it better," the minister said.
