The Spanish government will provide 2 million U.S. dollars to Nicaragua to help it fight crime, officials said.
The funds will be provided under an agreement signed Thursday, which envisions the construction of a modern laboratory for the Criminal Investigation Department of Nicaraguan police as part of a 2009-2012 action plan called Safety for Central America.
National Police Chief Aminta Granera and Spanish Ambassador Antonio Perez signed the agreement for the program, launched by the Spanish Cooperation Agency for Development.
Such cooperation is part of the mutual support pledged by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his Central American counterparts to strengthen security in the region.
