Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Sunday he had named Ali Rodriguez Araque as the new finance minister.

Chavez said Rodriguez had served as Venezuelan's ambassador to Cuba, oil minister, foreign minister and general secretary of the Organization of Petroleum Export Countries (OPEC).

He appointed Rodriguez to replace Rafael Isea, who is running for governor of the State of Aragua (north) as a candidate of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Chavez wished Rafael Isea success in the governors and mayors elections that will begin on Nov. 23.

The PSUV designated its candidates during the internal election on June 1. The opposition has not designated candidates, and it is unknown that if they will participate in the regional election in coalitions like they did before.
