Paraguayan President-elect Fernando Lugo visited the capital of Ecuador's central Bolivar province on Monday, where he was a priest three decades ago.
During the visit to Guaranda city, Lugo promised to "defend the sovereignty" of his country, and rescue it from its title of "the most corrupt country in South America."
Lugo visited the communities where he spent four years as a teacher and missionary.
A local university awarded Lugo with an honorary doctorate. He said, "This title comes from a country that has boosted its sovereignty and achieved equality with other countries."
Accompanying Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said Lugo was a" socialist of the 21st century," and that "Lugo has also entered the irreversible time of justice and peace."
Lugo will finish his visit to Ecuador on Tuesday, the second leg of his South American tour, which included Bolivia and will also take him to Venezuela.
