Mexico and the United States should strengthen mutual cooperation to combat drug trafficking more effectively, local media quoted U.S. Senate Majority (Democrat) Leader Harry Reid as saying on Monday.
Reid said drug consumption in the United States and arms smuggling into Mexico have exacerbated drug trafficking in the region, according to an interview published by local daily "El Universal."
Reid is one of the main backers of the Merida Initiative, a U.S. anti-drug assistance program.
In May, U.S. lawmakers approved the initiative with over 400 million U.S. dollars worth of aid for the increasingly fierce war against illegal drug cartels in Mexico and Central America.
