U.S. President George W. Bush is due to meet Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at the White House next week, the White House announced Tuesday.

"Bush will welcome Prime Minister Dung of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the White House on June 24, 2008," said a White House statement.

The scheduled summit meeting will "advance our close bilateral cooperation on a broad range of issues, including ASEAN, the United Nations Security Council, education, energy and climate change, food security, and regional economic integration," the statement said.

In addition to bilateral relationship and cooperation, Bush will also "take this opportunity to highlight the importance he attaches to respect for human rights and the freedoms of speech, religion, and assembly," the statement added.

The United States had war with Vietnam in the 1960's and tens of thousands of people were killed in the war. However, bilateral ties between the two countries have improved in recent years.

In mid-June 2007, Bush met with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, the first president from Vietnam to visit the White House since the Vietnam War.
