Mexican President Felipe Calderon Tuesday signed a constitutional amendment that will make the country's judicial proceedings more efficient and transparent.
Under the amendment, open trials will replace closed-door discussions by judges, who used to pass rulings based only on written evidence.
The law also allows prosecutors to hold organized crime suspects without charge for up to 80 days.
Speaking to representatives from the country's legislative and judicial bodies, the Mexican president said the amended judicial system shows more respect for human rights.
Calderon also called for a more forceful crackdown on organized crime and drug trafficking, saying if measures were not taken in a timely manner the whole country would have to bear the grave consequences.
