Outgoing Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte presented Monday his resignation to the Congress to be able to assume the charge of Senator on July 1, but opposition parties in Congress may not accept it because his term has two months to go
According to information reaching here from Asuncion, capital of Paraguay, Duarte gave his demission letter to the president of the National Congress Miguel Abdon Saguier (opposition), who summoned an extraordinary session for Tuesday in order to analyze Duarte's resignation.
The opposition parties demand Duarte to fulfill his mandate until Aug. 15 when former catholic bishop Fernando Lugo will take office as president.
Political analysts consider that Duarte does not want to give directly the power to Lugo, who won the presidential election on April 20, which put end to the 61 years of the Colorado Party government.
Duarte has said that if the opposition does not accept his resignation, he will block the work of the transition group that is coordinating the mandate transfer in the ministries of the government.
In case Duarte's resignation would de accepted he will be replaced for less than two month by Vice President Francisco Oviedo.
