An accountant who fled Canada two years ago after allegedly stealing 800,000 Canadian dollars (800,000 U.S. dollars) from day-care centers was arrested after stepping off a plane in Toronto Wednesday night, local media reported Thursday.

David Reiner, 61, lived in Kenya and Uganda for the past two years. He chose to return to face justice after the money was spent out.

He was accused of stealing money from 21 day-care centers in the Toronto area, for which he worked as a bookkeeper. He disappeared in September 2006, leaving behind his wife and two daughters.

The Fifth Estate, a program run by national broadcaster Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), tracked down Reiner in Uganda, and interviewed him about his alleged crimes, his time on the run and his disillusionment and desire to return to Canada to face justice.

At the suggestion of The Fifth Estate team, Reiner returned with them on their flight to Toronto, where he was arranged to surrender to police.

Reiner faces 42 counts of fraud and theft. He is expected to make an appearance in a Toronto courtroom Thursday.
