A commander of the Mexico's federal police was shot dead here by unknown assailants Thursday, police sources said.
Igor Labastida Calderon, director of Investigations of the Mexican Preventive Federal Police (PFP), and a bodyguard were killed when three gunmen opened fire at them in a restaurant at about 1.15 p.m. local time (1815 GMT), local security authorities said in a statement.
Another bodyguard died as he was on way to hospital. Two others are seriously injured.
Police are searching for the attackers.
Calderon is the latest police officer to die since Mexico launched its anti-drug offensive in December 2006, which has claimed the lives of 500 lawkeepers.
Last month, one of the country's top federal police chiefs, Edgar Milan, was killed by hit men linked to a powerful drug cartel.
The 5000-strong PFP was established in 1999 to enforce federal laws against crimes like drug trafficking and kidnapping. Source:Xinhua
