U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Thursday donated to Hillary Clinton 2,300 U.S. dollars, the maximum individual contribution allowed bylaw to a political candidate, to help alleviate her debt.

Obama made the donation at a closed-door private fundraising event in Washington D.C., which also marked the first time that he and his former rival for the Democratic presidential nomination appeared in public together since Clinton ended her campaign on June 7.

"When the two of them walked into the room, the room erupted," Terry McAuliffe, Clinton's chief campaign fundraiser, told reporters. "This campaign has ended. Hillary Clinton has said we've all got to get together.

The 17-month campaign left Clinton with a debt of more than 22 million dollars, including about 12 million dollars she had loaned to the campaign herself.

"He (Obama) wrote a check himself, as well as his finance chairman, so I've got two checks in my pocket for Hillary," McAuliffe said.

After their respective speeches, the two senators took questionsranging from helping with the debt to promoting a joint ticket.

Earlier this week, Obama e-mailed his five biggest donors asking for help to raise money to help Clinton pay off her debt.

In a speech to two trade groups earlier in the day, Clinton said: "Do everything you can to help elect Barack Obama."

"I have debated him in more debates than I can remember and I have seen his passion and his determination and his grit and his grace," she said. "In his own life he has lived the American dream."
