Eight people were seriously injured when violence broke out among prisoners at a prison in western Canada's Alberta province, officials said Wednesday.

The fight took place Tuesday at the recreation yard of Edmonton Institution federal prison between rival inmates. Seven people were stabbed by fellow prisoners and one was shot by a guard.

All the victims were in serious but safe condition. One had to be airlifted to hospital for treatment.

There are about 220 inmates at the prison, which is currently under lockdown, according to a news release issued Wednesday by Correctional Service Canada.
