Police on Wednesday shut down the upper- and lower-level roads through the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after a man claimed to be carrying a bomb.
A bomb squad was sent to the scene but found no explosives after searching a suspicious bag.
The man was arrested by Airport Police. His name was not immediately released.
The investigation snarled traffic around the horseshoe-shaped roads through the airport, although there did not appear to be any immediate impact on air travel. With cars and shuttle buses stuck in a heavy congestion trying to get into the airport, many passengers simply walked with their luggage up traffic ramps to reach the unaffected terminals.
A few minutes before 11 a.m., a man on the public side of the Tom Bradley International Terminal claimed to have explosive materials in a backpack, according to Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.
The Bradley terminal was not evacuated, but one of the two security checkpoints was closed. The other terminals at LAX remained open, Melendez said.
"A search of the area found an unattended bag located near a ticket counter in the international terminal and out of an abundance of caution a perimeter was established ..." Melendez said.
Police attempted to blow up the bag. A robot was then brought in to examine it. Police approached the bag and were able to inspect its contents, none of which were explosive.
Nancy Castles, spokeswoman for Los Angeles World Airports, the city agency that operates LAX, told NBC4 that about six flights were delayed at the Bradley terminal -- waiting for passengers who may be having a difficult time reaching the terminal.
